![]() This task force included commanders and observers not just from various NATO-aligned powers but an unprecedented Soviet contingent as well. So it was that a full combat brigade would be deployed to Iceland, trickling in by air and sea within 24 hours of the crash. ![]() NATO was soon planning an operation to secure the crashsite, but before long the USSR insisted on their involvement in light of the deployment of nuclear weapons. In response a total of six nuclear missiles were launched against the UFO - alarming the USSR further - eventually bringing it down in southeastern Iceland. As the F-8s approached and attempted communication with what was now readily identified as a craft of artificial manufacture unlike any previously known, they were fired upon, all of them shortly incinerated by the UFO's energy weapon systems well before they were even in range to retaliate. While communications with the USSR were already underway to discuss the alarming situation, a squadron of F-8 fighter-interceptors on the Atlantic coast scrambled to get a closer look at and identify the UFO. Further, the object’s signature was far too large to be a missile. Sensor operators initially reported it cruising southwest toward the Eastern Seaboard, but abruptly cut north toward Iceland, accelerating several hundred miles an hour in the blink of an eye and rapidly ascending in altitude. This theory only became more untenable when the object changed trajectory and velocity. This hypothesis was dismissed as unlikely almost immediately, when analysts noted that it was completely alone. 21 years ago, in 1958, NORAD sensor arrays detected what was first thought to be a Soviet missile flying over the Atlantic. Unbeknownst to the general public, however, Earth has been a part of the universe at large for far longer than most suspected. The world is gripped with panic and hysteria driven by a tumult of confusing mass media, even as many governments have done all they can to maintain peace and order and quell misinformation. Over the course of a week, more than 30,000 objects of extraterrestrial origin have been observed in Earth's orbit, a number rising ever higher as the rudimentary sensor systems of Earth's spacefaring countries and even amateur astronomers regularly report more and more probable sightings. ![]() But in early July of 1979, it was not the people of Earth that went to space, but rather space has come to Earth, and what was once fantasy has become reality.Ī foreboding one. Further fueling this curiosity of the world beyond was an album of pictures beamed back to Earth from the Voyager spacecraft in close orbit of Jupiter. Two years ago the smash hit "Star Wars" became a global cultural phenomenon unlike anything ever before seen, enrapturing public imagination in space fantasy.
